Jonathan grew up in District 9, a brilliant and earnest boy with an unfair strike against his character. His father was a chemist and a specialist in the human nervous system, with a particular emphasis in fear and anxiety. He meant well...but he was obsessive, as his work needed to be up to par with something reported to the Capitol, and he tended to project his neurosis onto everyone around him. Jonathan's mother left when he was around eight years old, exhausted by the constant research and paranoia his father displayed.

This left a little boy with a paranoid father, treating him for anxiety that he simply did not have. His days were spent in school, where he excelled in his studies...but his nights were spent as an unwitting lab rat, told that he was making his father proud.

By the time his father died of a heart attack, young Jonathan was a jumpy, twitchy creature, gawky and tall for his age with a heavy stutter to his speech to show for his troubles. He passed through school with ease, turning his attentions to psychology in an effort to understand himself a little bit better. Learning became aptitude, and aptitude became profession - he left his district behind and went into practice as a therapist, with specialties in psychopharmacology, the study of fears and phobias, and the treatment of PTSD.

Now he works in the Capitol, quietly listening to the troubles of the residents...and trying to secure a few tributes as patients.

They needn't know he has a deal with the Gamemakers.

Presentation:

Most people get a sense of weirdness looking at Dr. Crane - like something there is strange or wrong, but what exactly that is is...hard to discern. He's a very thin man, tall and angular and stretched-out in the limbs. He dresses quite demurely for a Capitol citizen, preferring browns and greens and blacks to the usual glitz. He claims this is to keep his patients calm... but honestly, he prefers to remain in the background of any situation. He doesn't want to be the focus - or so it appears.

His demeanor is polite enough, quietly professional, and there are many who would simply presume him to be a quiet, careful doctor. His voice is soft, and carries a bit of a stutter to this day; at first blush, he's really not terribly intimidating. His face, however, angular as it is with its always-sharp icy blue eyes...THAT can get a bit spooky if you spend a few minutes with him.

Jonathan tends to be the kind of man to prefer watching people to interacting with people.

Motivations:

What interests Jonathan the most, what drives him to do his job, what holds him at rapt attention like nothing else does...is fear. Understanding it. Conquering it. And...perhaps even learning to instill it in people. He wants to know what everyone is afraid of, why they're afraid of it, and how he could use that to his own end if need be. He will peel back every layer of your mind that he has to to get at the information, even if it takes more than a few sessions on his nice leather couch. It's not that he's a bad person, necessarily...he's simply more invested in your fears than he ever will be in you.

He has found a use for his unique talents in making a little extra money, AND a way to get the Capitol to look the other way from his somewhat unorthodox method...selling fears to the Gamemakers. He'll interview the Tributes, review their tapes, and then turn around and bring his notes to the people who make their lives a living hell.

Setting:

Jonathan absolutely loves the Games. They give him a lot more patients, and a lot more to study. To watch the Games is to watch these people struggling on a carnal level - struggling against starvation, death, and terror. He watches...and he writes down what he sees. What scares this Tribute? What scares that one? The people who aren't participating directly in the Games are of interest as well...do they see something on the screen that bothers them? Does their conscience secretly haunt them over watching these people die?

There's a lot about the Games themselves that Jonathan likes, and that's before you even touch upon the money he makes selling fear to the people who run them.

For Capitols OCs and AUs: For Capitols OCs and AUs: Somehow you ended up privy to a private post just gushing about how much they just LOVE the new games, how they think they are the best thing since sliced bread. Then the poster (Your friend? Some random person from a party who decided they wanted to send you their private thoughts? A rival trying to pin you into an uncomfortable spot?) namesdrops you for your opinion on the new format, versus the quaint, old-fashion style of the game.

Everyone on the broadcast is just waiting for your input.

If you ask me, the new Games are simply exquisite.

The struggle of people from our world was interesting, don't misunderstand - but the fresh blood, the new pathos they bring to the table? Exhilarating. These people are completely blind to the ways of our world!

My favorite thing is when new Tributes are brought into an Arena, fresh out of their universes with little explanation. Human condition at its most raw - and not always human, at that! The terror they must feel, the sense of

Prose:

"This is not an audition."

Jonathan kept his head up, pale eyes in deep sockets leering up at the Gamemakers. His jaw was set as best it can be, steeled as best he could manage to keep teeth from chattering. He didn't want them to know that he was terrified - but they would already know that he was nervous.

He avoided words that began with the letter 's' to keep his speech impediment at bay.

"We all know what this is really about. Putting a man like me in here? This isn't an audition. Not really. It's an execution."

Unable to contain himself, he began to pace back and forth, stringy hair falling into his face. He didn't trouble himself to remove it. Appearances didn't matter now. They had decided already what kind of person he must be - and no amount of simpering was going to change it.

It was all right, though.

In a way, they were right about him.

((WIP))

Taking up the scythe in his spindly hands, he brought it around in a wide arc, neatly slicing the head from one of the dummies in the room. Staring for a moment at his handiwork, he turned slowly on his heel...eyes steely and a crooked smile on his face.

"If you want a villain that badly...fine. Congratulations."

The smile cracked his lip. It started to bleed.

"You've got one."

What is your character scored: N/A, since he's not a Tribute!

Hunger Games AU and OC:

If a canon Scarecrow apps in, I think that Jonathan would actually have made very clear that he is interested in meeting his other self. He would have been vocal in saying that he would love an opportunity to compare minds and fears, and perhaps even treat this alternate self.

As I mentioned in the history section, Jonathan is from District 9. He doesn't hold any particular ill will towards the District, but the actual childhood home he used to live in is full of dark memories. He prefers not to think about it.
